We have all heard of greenhouse gas emissions and its scary big brother: climate change. How are scientists combating this problem and moving towards a cleaner, greener future? In this seminar, we will investigate innovative technologies that use energy from renewable sources. From buses that run on water, to energy harvesting sidewalks, we will explore the function, feasibility, and limitations of renewable energy solutions.

Math Methods for Econ

Develops mathematical skills required in macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and most fields of applied economics. Includes optimization techniques and dynamics. Mastery of mathematical reasoning is reinforced by extensive problem solving.

FYS-Economics Behind Our Lives

The Economics Department offers seminars to first-year students building on the College of Social and Behavioral Science's program on becoming a college student. In addition to discussing important topics in independent living, academic success, and using University resources, we add economics content on the general topic of the economics behind our lives. Relevant readings will be drawn from Real World Micro and Real World Macro.

FYS- Special Relativity

A little over a hundred years ago the world of physics was completely overturned when Einstein introduced the theory of special relativity. We will see how concepts that had been ingrained in the physics community for centuries had to drastically change. How much can we trust the intuition from our everyday life experiences to construct scientific theories? When do analogies work and when do they harm? How realistic are science fiction movies in portraying physics phenomena?

What is the truth behind processed foods? Why do I have bacteria in yogurt? What is GMO food and is it safe? This course will drive you to critical thinking by discussion-driven, and activity-based learning about the science of food.

FYS- Everyday Food Science

Understanding the basics of food science is the key to successfully cooking for yourself and others, and will help you to lead a healthier lifestyle and be a more informed consumer. This course will teach the fundamentals of the science behind food, including the basics of food safety, common cooking techniques, and the function of important vitamins and minerals. Students will learn how to think like a scientist when shopping in the grocery store or working in their kitchens, and will gain invaluable knowledge of food and cooking that will help them throughout college and beyond.

Beginning Korean I

This is an introductory Korean course, which is designed to help students acquire fundamental skills to read, write, listen and speak in elementary level Korean. Students will learn Korean writing system, Hangul, simple sentence patterns, and basic everyday conversations. By the end of the class, students will be able to carry a short conversation about people?s backgrounds, likes and dislikes, attributes, as well as locations, numbers and counters. Students will also be able to talk about present, past and future events.

FYS - Understand/Consumer,

As members of our society, we make many decisions that affect the environment and our natural resources. As consumers, employees, managers, voting members, or firm owners, our choices affect others around us, the environment and firm decisions. In this seminar, we will introduce a number of problems related to consumer choices, markets, firm and government decisions and the impacts of those choices on the environment, our natural resources and society in general.

FYS- Climate Change: Hot Mess

Human activity is causing the climate of our planet to change at an unprecedented rate. With all of the information available these days from a variety of sources it can be challenging to cut through the noise and get to the actual science. How do we know what is causing climate change, how does the current situation differ from the past, and what is going to happen in the future?
