ST-Air Pollution and Health

What is the air we breathe composed of and where do various pollutants come from? How does exposure to air pollutants manifest in chronic disease? What level of exposure is too much and how can I minimize my exposure? The goal of this course is to answer these questions and provide you with tools to quantify the environmental risks of air pollution.

Water, Culture & Public Health

Population centers have evolved around water sources to ensure provision of drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, and water for agriculture and animal husbandry. Water is a requirement for life, and when water supplies are threatened, communities will do whatever they can to protect their limited resources, even to declaration of war with neighboring regions. Waterways and coastlines are also critical for commerce, fisheries and tourism and can be equally zealously protected.

FYS - Getting on Track @SPHHS

The purpose of this course is to prepare exploratory track students to achieve academic success at UMass. The curriculum will aim to orient students to the health science fields and the major options within, assist students with major exploration outside of the health sciences, create strategies for academic success, transition to campus life and learn how to effectively navigate and utilize campus resources.

The purpose of this course is to prepare exploratory track students to achieve academic success at UMass. The curriculum will aim to orient students to the health science fields and the major options within, assist students with major exploration outside of the health sciences, create strategies for academic success, transition to campus life and learn how to effectively navigate and utilize campus resources.

Health Inequities

While the health and wellbeing of the nation has improved overall, racial, ethnic, gender and sexuality disparities in morbidity and mortality persist. To successfully address growing disparities, it is important to understand social determinants of health and translate current knowledge into specific strategies to undo health inequalities. This course will explore social justice as a philosophical underpinning of public health and will consider the etiology of disease rooted in social conditions.

Public Health Sciences Capston

The culminating experience of the Public Health Sciences Major, this course is designed for students to synthesize and integrate their learning from previous coursework, internship, and extra-curricular activities in the discipline. Course leads to a project, presentation, initiative, or research paper that is present at the Statewide Research Conference. Class also helps develop skills in teamwork, communication and leadership. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BS-PubHlth majors.

Food Toxicology

This course is designed to teach fundamentals of toxicology with an emphasis on food toxicology. Topics to be discussed include mechanisms of toxicity, absorption, metabolism, distribution and excretion of food toxins, dose-response relationships, major mechanisms of toxicity, sources and major groups of food toxins, toxicity testing methods and risk assessment.
