Creative Writing Fiction
A seminar in writing short stories and other fiction for students who demonstrate familiarity with the basis of scene and story. Students write regularly, read and criticize one another's writing, read in contemporary fiction. Prerequisite: ENGLISH 354 with a grade of 'B' or better.
Studies in Writing & Culture
This course in composition and rhetoric studies takes up questions of the relationship between writing production and various aspects of culture (e.g. identity, geography, economy, etc.)
Mod Novel 1945-Prsnt
Close reading and analysis of novels to achieve an awareness of the aesthetic and social characteristics of the modern novel and a critical appreciation of the possibilities and varieties of point of view, time, and psychology in literary modernism. (Gen. Ed. AL)
Intro to American Studies
Interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture. Focus on issues of race, class, gender, and ethnicity. Readings drawn from literature, history, the social sciences, philosophy and fine arts. Supplemented with audio-visual materialsofilms, slides of paintings, architecture, photography and material culture, and music. Required for students with a concentration in American Studies. (Gen.
