Intro Physics I

Basic physical laws governing mechanics, thermodynamics, and waves; examples and applications from the biological sciences, with lab. High school algebra and basic trigonometry required. The recommended introductory physics course for majors in the biological sciences and related areas. (Gen.Ed. PS)

Statistical Physics

Survey of thermodynamics. Boltzmann distribution, statistical interpretation of thermodynamics, Gibbsian ensembles and the method of Darwin, Fowler; quantum distributions and their applications, transport phenomena. Prerequisites: PHYSICS 424, 601, 606 (the latter may be taken concurrently).

Computational Physic

Computational physics in a computer laboratory setting. Numerical simulations of a variety of physical systems taught concurrently with programming skills using languages such as C, Mathematica or Matlab in a UNIX environment. No prior computer experience required. Prerequisites: PHYSICS 181 or 151, and MATH 132. Corequisite: PHYSICS 182 or 152.

Physics Of Music

Production and perception of musical sound. Waves; the physical basis of pitch, timbre, resonance, dissonance, and musical scales. Sound production in musical instruments and auditorium acoustics. Two lectures and one lab meeting every week. Elementary algebra and powers of ten notation used. (Gen.Ed. PS)

Superfluid&Supercond

Description of fundamental experiments and properties of superfluid 3He, 4He and superconductors. The two fluid model, elementary excitations, fluid structure, vortices, superfluid films and macroscopic quantum effects in superfluidity. Type I and II superconductors, the mixed state, the Meisner effect, superconducting junctions and an introduction to devices. Prerequisite: PHYSICS 614.
