Cultural, historical, political, psychological, scientific and social aspects of contemporary food habits in diverse parts of the world; hunters and gatherers, food production for better health, developed and developing countries, basis of food selection, food safety, food processing and preservation, world food resources, foods of the future; impact of modern biotechnology, food fermentation, and environmental issues related to global food and energy sources.

The health care systems of many industrialized nations, including the US, are facing daunting challenges such as a clear trend towards an aging of the population. This large elderly population having complex health conditions is beginning to severely stress the Medicare system. Researchers, health service providers and government leaders are seeking technological solutions to this problem in order to expand the capabilities of the healthcare system.

Fundamentals of wave motion, vibration of strings, sound waves, resonance, harmonic analysis, sound intensity and the decibel, physics of the ear and theories of hearing, physics of speech, elementary properties of microphones and speakers. ST- Film/End of the World

What insights do films with end-of-the-world scenarios, dystopian futures, and post-apocalyptic themes offer into the cultural moment that produces them? From alien invasions and planetary collisions to cataclysmic war and totalitarian dystopias, from the zombie apocalypse and the rise of machines, to human extinction and the end of civilization, what do these films tell us about contemporary realities? How do they speak to our anxieties and fears about the future as well as our hopes and aspirations? In what ways do these films pose and explore questions of the "human"?

Religion&Politics/EarlyModME

If Middle Eastern societies did not secularize during the years 1400-1800, does that mean that the relationship between politics and religion didn't change at all? In fact, important changes did occur and this course will investigate their impact on the region's history by surveying institutions, social movements, political writings and imperial policies of the Ottoman Empire and Iran. The development of Jewish identity and social institutions in the United States examined in socio-historical perspective. Topics include immigration patterns, labor movement, Yiddish culture, religious innovations, women's experiences, interaction with American culture. (Gen.Ed. HS, U)

Twentieth-Century Poetry I

Taught in French. An exploration of interactions between twentieth-century French poetry and the visual arts, with emphasis on the first half of the century. Topics include calligrams; the connections between art and poetry in works by Apollinaire, Reverdy, Cendrars, and Desnos; the illustrated book, in which poems are accompanied by artists' renditions or in which artists' drawings are then "illustrated" by poems; the representation of objects in Breton and Ponge; Eluard's poems describing painters; and the ekphrastic poetry of Michaux and Heather Dohollau.

S-Activism, Partic, Protest

This course examines contemporary forms of political activism, participation, and protest. Drawing on select case studies, principally from Latin America, the U.S, and Europe, we will pay particular attention to the dynamic development of feminisms, anti-racist/Black mobilizations, anti-austerity and pro-democracy protests, and LGBTQ organizing.

Community Food Systems

This course examines the movement of food from seed to table. Participants explore local and global food systems, and specific food related issues that impact health of communities. Among the topics included are: examining the economic and political decisions that frame our food chain, direct marketing, commercial agriculture, processing, food justice, hunger, health, food security, peak oil, school food systems and school gardens, Community Supported Agriculture, farmers? markets, small scale farming and homesteading.
