Marine Biology

This course introduces life in the sea from ecological and evolutionary perspectives. Topics will include primary and secondary production, interrelations of marine organisms and their environment (e.g. rocky intertidal, estuaries, interstitial communities, coral reefs, deep-sea communities), adaptations of marine organisms, human impacts on marine life, biodiversity, conservation, and aquaculture.

Field Ecology: Exp Approach

This course provides an introduction to methods in field ecology, with an emphasis on rigorous experimental design, hypothesis testing, data collection, introductory data analysis, and presenting results. The ability to pose clear questions, state hypotheses, and design appropriate experiments to test these hypotheses is of fundamental importance in all research disciplines; this course takes advantages of challenges in field ecology to address these essential topics.

Social Movements & Env Justice

This course examines the relationship between environmental conditions and social justice. Students will consider the social and political forces that differentially distribute vulnerability and contribute to health and socioeconomic disparities between populations. In this course, students will consider both local and global struggles for environmental justice, with case studies that focus on historically marginalized communities in the United States as well as in the Global South.

Haz Waste Ops & Emerg Respnse

Meets federal requirements of 40-hours training involving methods and concerns for workers handling hazardous materials as specified by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.120. First aid and CPR sessions provided for uncertified individuals. Site specific Health and Safety Plans prepared prior to and after entry into an industrial facility. Simulated drills perfomed by students in personal protective equipment responding to unknown incidents to challenge skills developed in lecture. Certifications awarded to students who meet course requirements, pass the final exam, and attend all lectures.
