This course provides the student with an understanding of major theories used to understand health problems in communities. Grounded in social and behavioral sciences, students will examine the tools and strategies used by public health educators to educate and empower people about health issues.

This is a seminar/discussion-based course where readings from a range of areas in chronic disease epidemiology will be discussed. Topics will focus on areas of recent interest (e.g., cell phones and brain cancer) and areas where significant differences of opinion related to scientific findings have existed.

This 1-credit class is open to Dietetic Track students only. It is designed to provide instruction and support for students in the application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP). With the help of the instructor, students will develop nutritional care plans for case studies as it relates to successful completion of NUTRITN 580 case students.

Skills and techniques needed to effectively carry out community nutrition programs and nutrition education, including knowledge of agencies and programs, community assessment, legislation, nutrition education, and working with people.

Student presentations of topics which integrate previous coursework.

Satisfies Junior Year Writing requirement for Nutrition majors only. Assignments include: resume, abstract, personnel evaluation, medical records, position paper, and educational materials.

Knowledge of dietary treatment of diseases (Medical Nutrition Therapy) applied in simulated one-on-one counseling settings. Topics include: interviewing/listening skills, assessing readiness, developing care plans, multicultural counseling, computerized diet analysis.
