S-Aging and Cognition

This seminar provides an overview of the cognitive changes that occur as a function of normal and, to a lesser extent, pathological aging. We will cover a broad variety of topics including theories of cognitive aging, brain aging, animal models of cognitive aging, hormonal influences and menopause, and interventions for successful aging.

S-Neurobiology of ParentalCare

This seminar course examines the fundamental cognitive, motivational, and affective processes that underlie parenting behavior. Primary emphasis will be placed on (i) understanding how endocrine, sensory and experiential information is integrated within the relevant neural circuitry that yields this complex behavior under healthy conditions, and (ii) how neuropsychological dysfunction, as with maternal mental disorders, leads to disturbances in parenting and in the mother-infant relationship.

S-CivilResistance&SocialChange

Focusing on so-called campaigns of "nonviolent direct action," "people power," "unarmed insurrection," or "color revolutions," this course will apply sociological perspectives to the causes, effects, and dynamics of resistance in political and non-institutional mobilizations. Among the topics: how organized, strategic, and mass-mobilized popular resistance sometimes brings about change, only to spawn its own forms of domination.

S-Prejudc, Stertyp & Soc Ident

This course is designed to enhance knowledge about basic social psychological research on intergroup relations, prejudice, stereotyping, and social identity, so that you can work with diverse populations in terms of your research. For the purpose of this course, we will use a broad definition of social groups, although particular attention will be focused on race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and age.
