Media Violence (colloq)

COMM Seniors enrolled in the colloquium will take part in a community service learning project in which they will create, practice, and then implement a media literacy unit for local sixth graders. Students will work with the instructor for the first half of the semester to create readings, exercises, and activities designed to inspire local young people to develop critical thinking about our topic, media violence. Then, students will travel to local sixth grade classrooms to implement the unit, facilitating dialogue with the sixth graders on the topic.

Discovering Islam

Islam is a religious tradition with 1400 years of history and over one billion adherents today in countries around the globe. This course equips students with the basic vocabulary needed to engage with the diversity of practices, sects, and intellectual currents found among Muslims over the course of this history. We will begin by studying the life of Muhammad and Islam’s scripture (the Quran).

ST- Scientific Paper Writing

Students will learn a very structured method/approach to writing scientific papers beginning with use of their their own data (in figure or table format) brought to class and step by step construction of scientific information that will result in a manuscript, thesis, dissertation or planning document.
