Learning Through Comm Engmnt

This course engages students in the practice of Community Service Learning, including consideration of what constitutes appropriate and effective community service, and how to learn deeply from this experience. Each time it is offered, it is organized around a topic of public concern that draws on a variety of perspectives, and it places students with community organizations in service that relates directly to the course topic. Students therefore integrate academic learning with experiential learning.

Elementary Catalan I

This course is an introduction to Catalan for students with no prior knowledge of the language. Through a task-based, communicative approach, this course seeks to initiate students into the elements of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Catalan.

Tropical Field Biology

Introduction to the ecology, behavior, taxonomy, and physiology of tropical organisms, with emphasis on close observation of living organisms in nature. Includes hands-on investigation of coastal and marine ecosystems. Students will participate in a field trip to Costa Rica during the Spring Break. With Biology 494LI, this course satisfies the Integrative Experience for BS-Biol majors.

Brave New World

Utopian and dystopian novels. The ability of literature to generate social critique. Readings include works by Huxley, Orwell, Kafka, Atwood, Burgess, Gibson, Piercy, Gilman, Dick, and others. (Gen.Ed. AL, G)

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines health communication as "the and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health." This class will provide an introduction to the issues and methods associated with effective communication of health related information.

Recreational drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, discussed. Prerequisite: introductory psychology. Some chemistry recommended.

Comparative Politics

An introductory exploration of political systems in several nation states in various parts of the world. Coverage differs depending on the specialties and interests of instructor. Students learn about generalized comparative approaches and political development, political processes and political institutions in each state covered. (Gen.Ed. SB, G)

S-Media in American Politics

The media have been known as the "fourth branch" of the American political system, and not without reason. This course examines the changing role of media in American politics. Key issues include how media shapes citizens' thinking about politics, how politicians and citizen activists try to advance their goals through media, and how media outlets themselves shape what is considered news.

Controvrsies Pub Pol

Introduction to contemporary public policy issues and debates. Various perspectives on public policy, including equality, justice, and efficiency. Emphasis on in-class discussion and debates. Applications may include environmental policy, affirmative action, immigration, welfare policy, education, health, and other public policies.
