CHEM-ENG 291H will be a one-credit stand-alone sophomore-level honors colloquium that enhances the chemical engineering curriculum. The Honors course will consist of mandatory attendance at a weekly Seminar Series. These seminars will provide students with an opportunity to see the current research being conducted in chemical engineering. The seminars will display the breadth and excellence of the research occurring at UMass.

An introduction to chemical engineering problem-solving methods. Basic chemical engineering principles and their application to chemical processes studied. Concepts include pressure, temperature, volume, heat capacity, and mass and energy balances.

Development and analysis of mathematical models for chemical engineering systems. Topics include statistics for data analysis, linear and nonlinear algebraic equation models, ordinary differential equation models and numerical methods for model solution.

Developing new materials and devices for medical applications is a challenging interdisciplinary problem. It requires an understanding of materials properties, biological responses to the materials, regulatory issues, etc. Materials at the nano-scale offer improved functionality for numerous applications including drug delivery, diagnostic tools, and tissue engineering scaffolds. This senior and graduate co-listed course will introduce students to various classes of materials, nanostructure synthesis, characterization techniques, and device evaluation.
