Intro to Media and Culture

An introduction to the social role of mass media in advanced industrial Western societies, focusing on how relationships between mass communications and the surrounding economic framework affect cultural, political, and ideological processes in society. An examination of social and historical contexts within which newspapers, radio, and television developed and how they are structured with attention to both the domestic and international implications of treating mass media as just another industry.

ST- Strategies/Career-Seeking

This course is designed to help you transition from student to professional. This course offers two distinct parts which will occur contemporaneously throughout the semester. First, you will role play the part of a recruiter for a position of great importance to you, which will help you understand exactly why the hiring process is what it is. Second, you will play the role of a career seeker, which is ultimately what you will be once you graduate.
