This course will examine the economic, political and social developments in Ireland, from the Act of Union to "the Troubles" in Northern Ireland. In particular we will focus on the divisive issues of land ownership, religious sectarianism and the articulation of a national identity as we chart Ireland's progress from a British colony to an independent state. We will also discuss Irish emigration to America, and the influence of Irish-American nationalism or Irish political movements. (Gen.Ed. HS)
