Elementary German

Dialogues, reading selections from print and electronic sources, and grammar exercises for basic communication, a good understanding of the fundamentals of German grammar, and an introduction to the traditions and institutions of the German-speaking countries. Prerequisite GERMAN 110 or equivalent.

Advanced Conversation

Course taught in French. Conversation practice on assigned topics. Dictation of prepared texts to improve listening comprehension. Recitation of short passages of French poetry and prose to improve pronunciation. Prerequisites: Completion of a French 240 level course.

An introduction to French with an emphasis on acquiring a basic level of proficiency in the language and understanding of the culture of France and the Francophone world. Freshmen with one senior year of high school French with a grade of A or B or with two years of high school French are encouraged to enroll in FRENCHST 120 rather than this course.

Genre Course-Theater

Course taught in French. A diachronic study of French and Francophone theater from Medieval Drama to the contemporary stage, with reference to a wide range of theoretical approaches. The course will examine major movements in the rich history of French theater, including Classicism, romanticism, realism, surrealism, and the theater of the absurd. Theater as social commentary; relationships between theater and religion, political movements, postcolonialism, and questions of gender and race. Team-taught, drawing on the expertise of the French and Francophone Studies faculty.
