Pompeii

This course closely examines the ancient city of Pompeii in order to understand its development from a prehistoric village to the Roman city buried by Vesuvius in AD 79.

This is the first course in the four-course Citizen Scholars Program. In this course, we ask how society would be organized if it truly were good, and students are encouraged to unleash their imaginations?to envision the social structures and shared understandings that would characterize a truly good society. Cross-cultural examples and models from utopian fiction will help generate ideas about alternatives.

Freshman Seminar

This seminar course is designed to guide students as they imagine and design both their UMass Dance experience and craft their larger vision for careers in dance beyond university. Ideas and concepts that shape forms of expression are referenced and illuminated through writing, classroom viewings, listenings, readings as well as attendance performances. Students will research and discuss possibilities for futures in dance, and ask essential questions like: How do I view and write about dance from a critical perspective? What is the difference between academic and creative research?

ST-Climate Crisis

This course is an introduction to the political ecology of climate change, response, and justice. It provides an opportunity to engage in critical reading and discussion about the great moral, political, economic, and environmental challenge of our time. We will explore climate crisis narratives;mitigation, adaptation, and climate justice issues; policy and social/economic reform debates; and climate activism. Reading will range from IPCC reports to work by Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein, and Indigenous activists.

BusinessIntelligence&Analytics

This course provides an introduction to Business Intelligence, including the
processes, methodologies, infrastructure, and current practices used to
transform business data into useful information and support business
decision-making. Business Intelligence requires foundation knowledge in
data storage and retrieval, thus this course will review logical data models
for both database management systems and data warehouses. Students will
learn to extract and manipulate data from these systems and assess
