This course examines the history of Japanese religions, including Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and various new religions through themes such as art, ritual, gender, charisma, and sacred space.

Introduction to the literary language of Japan, through the study of classical grammar and the linguistic analysis of poetry and short prose.
