Spectroscopy Theory
Microwave, infrared, Raman, visible and ultra-violet spectra and structure. Molecular geometry from rotational spectra, normal coordinate analysis, anharmonicity and dissociation, hindered rotors, crystals, intensities and charge flux, vibrational dichroism, non-linear inelastic light scattering. Prerequisite: CHEM 476 or equivalent.
Elementary Physical Chemistry
An overview of physical chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics, statistical and quantum mechanics, and spectroscopy) emphasizing applications to biology including macromolecule structure and stability, ligand binding, enzyme catalysis, and membrance structure and transport.
Organic Chem Lab
Experimental organic chemistry with emphasis on underlying physical principles. Separation and purification, synthesis, analysis, and identification of organic compounds, including spectroscopy. Microscale work predominates. Emphasis on safe laboratory practices and proper disposal of wastes. Prerequisite or co-requisite: CHEM 262 or 266.

Organic Chemistry
Organic Chemistry II for Non Majors. Together with CHEM 261 satisfies requirements for medical school admissions. Acceptable, with approval of the Undergraduate Chemistry Adviser, though not recommended, for chemistry majors. Brief review of basic principles of chemical bonding, electronic theory, and acid-base reactions. Introduction to principles of stereochemistry and organic spectroscopy. Discussions of the most common types of reactions of organic molecules and their mechanisms.
Gen Chem-Sci
Basic principles of structure and reactivity. Microscopic nature of atoms and molecules; the macroscopic properties of chemical systems. Topics include stoichiometry, thermochemistry, atomic structure, molecular structure, properties of gases. (Gen.Ed. PS)
Prerequisites: MATH 101 and MATH 102, or its equivalent of MATH 104, or a score of 20 or higher on Part "A" of the Math Placement test, or MATH 127, 128, 131, or 132. Note: a maximum of 5 units may be received for both CHEM 101 and CHEM 102, or 2 units for either, if CHEM 111 is completed.
