Examines physical elements that compose a variety of visual environments including gardens and paintings; the cultural values underlying different types of American landscapes, from wilderness to cities; and the ways in which other cultures perceive, use, and create their own visual environments. Rsrch Issues in Envir Plan Des

Survey of research issues in environmental design and planning. Designed to assist students in developing research in their area of interest. Includes selecting a topic for research, synthesizing the pertinent literature, developing research questions, designing a research study, and communicating the research findings verbally, visually, and in writing. This course satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BS-SUSTCOMM (formally BS-EnvDes) majors.

Viking Revival

An interdisciplinary course exploring the 19th-century revival of the Viking image, using literature, philosophy, music and the visual arts to trace the motif as an expression of nationalism ca. 1800-1914. One course objective is to introduce major Scandinavian cultural figures such as H. C. Andersen, Kerkegaard, Ibsen, Sibelius, and Edvard Munch in their cultural contexts.
