Honors Seminar 2: Topics

This seminar is a required course for Commonwealth Honors College students where students participate in a topical seminar-style course designed by its instructor. While the subject matter of each section is different, advanced knowledge of the topic is not required. While the subject matter of each section is different, the requirements for each section are the same.

Classroom Assessment

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an introduction to classroom assessment that includes a consideration of technical issues, as well as policy issues related to test use and misuse in American education. The ultimate goal of this course is to provide the student with a balance of both theory and its practical applications in the area of assessment. This class is not designed strictly for teachers; however, students who are education minors or who plan to become teachers will find this class useful.

Intro to Multicultural Educ

Introduction to the sociohistorical, philosophical, and pedagogical foundations of cultural pluralism and multicultural education. Topics include experiences of racial minorities, white ethnic groups and women; intergroup relations in American society, sociocultural influences and biases in schools; and philosophies of cultural pluralism. BIODIVERSITY,ECOL & CONSRV LAB

Laboratory sessions in this course combine observational and experimental protocols both in the lab and in the field. Students gain familiarity with the diverse lineages of life and design and conduct research to address specific hypotheses about a subset of lineages. There are also field trips to local sites where students engage in observations of organisms in their natural habitats and in experimental exploration of ecological interactions. Prerequisite: BIO 154 (normally taken concurrently).

ELECTRONICS

A semester of experiments in electronics, with emphasis on designing, building and trouble-shooting circuits. Discrete electronic components: physics and applications of diodes and transistors. Analog and digital IC circuits: logic gates, operational amplifiers, timers, counters and displays. Final individual design project. Prerequisite: 118 or permission of the instructor.

COUNSELING THEORY & EDUCATION

This course introduces various theories of counseling and their applications to children, adolescents and families. Behaviors that signal a need for attention and counseling are discussed. Students gain knowledge about themselves as individuals and learners, and learn how to listen actively to others. Enrollment limited to 55.

SEM:TOPICS IN EVIRONMENTAL BIO

Topics course. Conservation biology combines ecological and evolutionary principles with resource management, the social sciences, and ethics to understand, manage and maintain biodiversity. This seminar is designed to familiarize students with the questions conservation biologists ask and the methods they use to conserve life on Earth. Students engage in problem-solving exercises that examine conservation-related questions at the genetic, population, community, landscape or ecosystem levels and employ suitable analytical techniques or strategies to address the questions.
