Language Crossing

When did you start dreaming in a second language? Which translation of the Bible counts as the Word of God? Was Mary a virgin or a maiden? What happens to the immigrant children who need to be the interpreters in the life of their family? How much more tangled or how much more nimble is the wiring of the bilingual brain? What are we doing to our languages when we immerse in a new academic discipline? We will tackle these and other questions as we engage in the following units of study: (1) Babel and language differentiation and diffusion.

Duality

When scientific breakthroughs emerge, who decides their fate? The same nuclear science that powers cities also created history's most devastating weapons. The chemicals that fed millions poisoned Vietnam's landscape for generations. Today's AI revolution promises both unprecedented advancement and unsettling control. This seminar invites first-year students to explore the complex terrain where innovation meets ethical questions. We'll examine pivotal technologies, such as nuclear power, chemical agents, artificial intelligence, and the critical moments when society chose its paths.

Power

Power is a central feature of political life and one of the key concepts of political science. This course will examine the main approaches and controversies in the study of power. We will investigate how these approaches help us to better understand how power operates in the real world by engaging with various case studies, including: how power works in prisons, schools, at home, in local and global politics, in an Appalachian mining town, a small village in Malaysia, and in countless ways in every day life. (Gen. Ed. DG, SB)
