Social Impact of Mass Media

This course explores research on the influence of mass media on audiences. The course examines the effects of television (and some other media) on thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. Topics include politics and the media, the influence of news, public service campaigns and advertising, and media influence on health. Students will take three in-class exams and will do in-class writing in each class session.

Social Impact of Mass Media

Media and Education

This course will provide an overview of the theories, tensions, and debates within the study of media literacy and media education as they apply to K-12 classrooms and community endeavors. Current research studies in this area will be examined and students will have the opportunity to design their own media literacy curricula.

S-Social Media & Politcl Comm

This course examines how the rise of new technologies is changing the landscape of politics. We will examine the social science literature on media and politics, and explore how the emergence of digital communication, including the Internet, mobile technology, social media, and big data, are transforming the nature of political communication.

S-Experimental Film and Video

This course explores the genre of Experimental Film and Video with a
critical eye toward the history and current articulations of this form
of production in both feature film and short form movies/videos. The
course begins with an introduction to the genre, then explores
Experimental Film/Video according to three different categories:
Experimentation with Narrative, Experimentation with Structure/Form,
and Experimentation with the line between Fact and Fiction. Students
will emerge from this course with a solid foundation in the history
