This course explores the art of contemporary theater and the power of live performance through a series of shows the students attend in person, along with theater projects they create in a group. Through engagement with both longstanding and new ways of making theater, students will gain exposure to how live theater is being made in the world today -- an exciting moment of new frontiers and forms. Tutorial projects in design theory and conceptualization and the solving of related technical problems. Over a three-year period, the course covers lighting technology, technical and artistic problem solving, graphics, research, critical and analytical skills, visual light lab projects, and portfolio development. Design, assistant design, and technical assignments on Department of Theater productions.

Introduction to the art and craft of theatrical sound design. Lecture topics will include the physical characteristics and behavior of sound. Projects will expose students to the tools of music and sound creation and development, as well as an introduction to sound system basics. Students will get handson experience by working on load-ins and strikes for Department productions.
