This discussion-based community-engaged course provides theoretical content and professional training on the impact of cultural differences - due to the intersectionality of age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, class, nationality, religion, occupation, and other factors - on access to legal services and resources, public policy protection, and, by extension, social justice.

Lighting Design Studio

This course addresses lighting design theory, conceptualization, and solution of related technical problems. Advanced lighting lab and paper projects. Advanced lighting assignments on department productions. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Theatr majors. Prerequisites: THEATER 361, consent of instructor. May be repeated for credit.

Data Analytics with Python

The modern world is awash with data, and making sense of it requires specialized skills. This course will expose students to commonly used data analytics techniques. Topics include the acquisition, manipulation, and transformation of structured data, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, and predictive modeling. Students in this course will learn and use the Python programming language and tools for working with data. Analysis will be performed using real data sets. Does not count as a CS Elective (BA or BS).

Good and Evil

Are people born knowing right and wrong, good and evil? What does ?evil? look like, and do you know it when you see it? This course will investigate how humans have represented ?good,? ?evil,? and related concepts across a variety of cultural contexts throughout time. Concerns guiding our readings may include the suffering of the innocent, the existence of evil, and the development of a moral consciousness and responsibility. We may also consider how discourses of good and evil shape and are in turn shaped by race, gender, and class.

IS-Embedded Capture-The-Flag

MITRE's eCTF (embedded capture-the-flag) is an embedded security competition that puts participants through the experience of trying to create a secure system and then learning from their mistakes. The main target is a real physical embedded device, which opens the scope of the challenge to include physical/proximal access attacks. The eCTF is a two-phase competition with attack and defense components. In the first phase, competitors design and implement a secure system based on a set of challenge requirements. The second phase involves analyzing and attacking the other teams' designs.

Honors Research

The Commonwealth Honors College thesis or project is intended to provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members to define and carry out in-depth research or creative endeavors. It provides excellent preparation for students who intend to continue their education through graduate study or begin their professional careers. The student works closely with their 499Y Honors Research sponsor to pursue research on a topic or question of special interest to them in preparation for writing a 499T Honors Thesis or completing a 499P Honors Project.

Genomic Approaches/Food Sci

This course will provide an applied introduction to bioinformatics, computational biology, and genomics. Topics covered include genome assembly, gene prediction, functional annotation, gene expression quantification, variant identification, amplicon sequencing, metagenomic analysis etc. Students will use the UMass UNITY high performance computing cluster during this course, and will learn a basic understanding of command line software in a LINUX environment. Students will undertake a research project using their own genomic data, or publicly available data.
