S-Surveying Sex

In this course, we will examine several areas of the social demography of sexuality, including theoretical and conceptual developments and patterns of sexual expression, with an emphasis on populations in the United States. Specific topics include theoretical perspectives, historical and cross-cultural variation, sexuality across the life course, sexualities and sexual identities, sexually transmitted infections, and the politics of sexuality.

The Caribbean

This general education course surveys the cultural, social, economic and political history of the Caribbean from the late fifteenth century to the present. This lecture and discussion course focuses on the Greater Antilles (i.e., Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico) in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will explore key historical moments in the region to better understand how the peoples of the Caribbean negotiated concepts of sovereignty, labor, economic independence, and self-determination.

Modern Applied Stat Methods

The goal of this course is to introduce some statistical modeling approaches, which have been developed in the last few years and are widely used in medical and public health research, but are not covered in the core courses of the MS/PhD programs in Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Topics include penalized regression, methods for classification, evaluation of predictions, and robust regression. The cross-validation and bootstrapping procedures, which are important in evaluating and performing inference for models, will be introduced.
