Vergil's Aeneid

Selections in Latin from the Roman poet Vergil's epic, the Aeneid, with analysis of poetic structure, style, and cultural context. Prerequisite: 300-level course in Latin or equivalent with a grade of C or higher.

Greek History

Selections from Greek historians: Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybios, etc. Emphasis on the evolution of historiography in the ancient world. Prerequisite: 300-level course in Greek or equivalent.

Germany Today

This course examines historical, political, social and cultural developments, movements, and transformations in Germany since reunification. Students explore the fall of the Berlin Wall, Holocaust memory and memorialization, the GDR past, reunification, multiculturalism, environmentalism, and how Germans engage with these topics in literature, film, exhibits, memorials, and the media. In addition to the primary sources, course materials will include secondary sources on German history, politics, society, and culture. Conducted in English. (Gen.Ed. I)

Middle Engl Lit

Readings of selected works written in the later Middle Ages in England, exclusive of Chaucer's. Lyrics, drama, dream-vision allegories, romances. The works as poetry and as expressions of medieval consciousness; how authors grapple with the problems of love, war, faith, social corruption and revolution.
