In this class, students will develop a variety of skills necessary for undertaking writing feature stories and getting them published. Students will learn to identify strong story ideas, query magazine editors, and turn ideas into finished products ready for submission. Finding the story is a process that unfolds throughout the writing process of gathering information and facts (through observation, research, and interviews), developing a strong lead, selecting and structuring the material, and revising for clarity and interest.

Journalism 394I is a three-credit practicum experience that includes intensive reporting, writing, workplace collaboration and reflection on ethics, the role of public writing and the liberal arts education in the real-world experiences of the journalist. In addition to the traditional internship experience at a qualified employer, students will participate in a blog published on the Journalism Program website in which they will reflect on their liberal arts education and its relevance in their journalistic activities on the internship.

This course examines women's political incorporation in the United States primarily, but not exclusively, with respect to electoral politics. We explore women's pre-suffrage political activities before delving into the campaign for women's suffrage. We study the effects of achieving suffrage on women's political behavior during the period immediately following their achievement of the right to vote and beyond.

This course is designed to develop oral and written skills in order to increase fluency in Spanish. Exposure to different aspects of Spanish language structure through a variety of written and oral practices.
