Communication Inquiry

This course is designed to allow you to engage with the methods of qualitative and quantitative research, to examine the possible research questions different methods allow, to understand both the limits and the potential of various methods, to be able to conceptualize and execute a research project and apply its methods, and also to reflect on the role of Communication research and the ways it helps us to know ourselves and to know the world. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Comm majors.

The Solar System

Lecture: For nonscience majors. Introduction to the physical characteristics of the earth, moon, planets, asteroids and comets, their motions and gravitational interactions. Recent discoveries of space probes relative to formation of the solar system and origin of life.

Lab: Multiple sections. For nonscience students. Introduction to the night sky, telescopes, astronomical events, and celestial maps. Visual and telescopic observations of the constellations, moon, planets, stars, and other interesting astronomical objects. Attendance required.(Gen.Ed. PS)

Cncpt Moleclr Genetc

Fundamental concepts of molecular genetics; from the central dogma to recent progress in DNA replication, recombination, and transposition, and mechanisms of gene regulation. Emphasis on design of experiments and interpretation of experimental data in microbial systems. Prerequisite: general background in biochemistry and molecular genetics.

Drug Resistance: Molecular Mec

Drug resistance is a major problem that complicates the treatments of infectious diseases. It is a consequence of genetic changes in a microbe, and molecular mechanisms vary widely including mutations of target enzymes, increased expression of efflux pump, horizontal transfer of resistance gene, and induction of inactivating enzymes.
