The Body Politic

An interdisciplinary exploration of how American political and legal power is exercised upon and through the human body. Particular attention will be paid to the regulation and physical control of bodies, as well as the use of bodies in protest and resistance to state power, including through political art. While a range of topics and movements fall within this general description, we will examine most closely the politics of AIDS and reproductive health in the United States. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

S-Central Asia and the World

Central Asia & the World: Central Asia today is often associated with buzzwords such as "petrostates,- "Islamic radicalism,- and "authoritarianism." Yet it is a dynamic and complex region which lies at the intersection of multiple historical empires and geographic regions. The course provides a foundation to evaluate debates about current trends and developments in post-Soviet Central Asia. The course is divided into three major units: 1) From Empire to Statehood; 2) Identity Politics; and 3) Political Economies and Globalization.

Technology Power and Governanc

The course examines power and uses of digital technologies in national, transnational and global governance. Topics include inequalities, transparency, civil society, state capacity, privacy, social movements, cyberwar and electoral politics. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

Intr Constitutnl Law

Introduction to the American constitution as law. The importance of the text and the traditions of interpretation. The courts, congress, and the presidency. Also local power, the bill of rights, and the fourteenth amendment. (Gen.Ed. SB)

Rvltn Ntlsm Impr Crb

Focuses on four countries often denied a Caribbean identity Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti whose politics are assessed in regional Caribbean terms, identifying common factors in historical and contemporary development. POLISCI 245 recommended.
