Hands-on workshops for teachers based on cutting-edge research areas in Science and Engineering. Topics include: From LCDs to living liquid crystals; Superhydrophobic Surfaces; Plants, Pipettes and PCR; Materials for clean energy; and Birds in an ecological web.
Science & Art of Glassblowing
Identification of the properties of different types of glass and glass components; Ability to explain what types of glass and glass components to use for specific functions and pieces; Utilization of pressure charts for creating glass components; Application of knowledge of vacuum technology and the care of vacuum pumps; Creation of simple glass pieces; Demonstration of safety practices when working with glass.
Honors Research
An independent research project supervised by a professor chosen by student. Early in semester a thesis proposal is written, approved by a thesis committee and submitted to the Commonwealth College Office. About 3-4 hours of lab per week per credit. Continued as 499T in subsequent semester.

CNS Junior Writing
Multidisciplinary professional writing course. Research, analyze, reference and write in the formal and informal text conventions used by Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Conservation, & Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
