Petrology

With lab. Genesis of igneous and metamorphic rocks in the earth's crust and upper mantle. Experiment and theory applied to the interpretation of natural rock textures and their origin. Introduction to thermometry and barometry of magmas and rocks. Recognition of rocks and crystallization histories using the polarizing microscope. Prerequisite: GEO-SCI 311.

Geological Fld Mthds

With outdoor lab. Understanding and interpreting topographic and geologic maps; using the Brunton compass and other surveying equipment; making reconnaissance maps; applications to environmental problems; describing rock units; measuring and correlating stratigraphic sections; compiling and producing bedrock maps. Prerequisites: either GEO-SCI 101 or 103 or 105 and GEO-SCI 131.
