S-Plang&Dsgn/Eleuthera/Bahamas

The tropical island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, is home to two very polarized groups of residents: the extremely wealthy - people such as Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates have homes here - and the not-so-wealthy residents descended from former plantation slaves and ship wrecked sailors. You will work with the communities in a series of charrettes to plan and design two sites for community festivals and heritage events. The focus of the class will be on sustainable design and planning, in the context of an island rich in history and extremely vulnerable in both its environment and economy.
