Advanced training in practical techniques associated with the translation of modern Japanese; familiarization with appropriate glossaries, dictionaries and other translator's tools. Discussion of specific problems in Japanese-English translation and practice with a variety of prose styles used in journalistic, political, commercial, literary, and other forms of modern writing. General nature of modern Japanese phonology and syntax. Detailed analysis of major syntactic construction of modern "standard" Japanese. Controversial issues in Japanese linguistics. Linguistics 101 or 401 may be taken concurrently.

Critical reading and appreciation of selected major masterpieces in cultural and literary contexts; improving grammar and dictionary skills.

This non-intensive third year Japanese course continues to train students to work exclusively with authentic materials. Strong emphasis on oral proficiency and developments of composition skills, while also increasing kanji recognition and production. Taught primarily in Japanese.
