How do we know what we know? And, how sure can we be about it? These are the challenges of inference. Statistical thinking worries about both these questions. Statistical methods allow us to assess risk and measure uncertainty. Over the last 50 years statistical practice, like so much of our world, has dramatically changed and yet, fundamentally, the same challenges remain.
