This course focuses on the potential role of rhetoric in advancing an ethical and good life. It does so by examining several issues first drawn in ancient Greek rhetorical theory as they relate to contemporary concerns. This course also considers psychoanalysis and critiques of psycho-analysis as the descendant of the ancient debate between rhetoric and philosophy, especially concerning the role of desire in the art of living.

This lab course will cover basic concepts of microbiology with an emphasis on sterile technique, microscopy, isolation and cultivation of microorganism. Identification of pathogenic organisms, antibiotic susceptibility testing, epidemiology and the detection of microbes in food will be covered. This is a 1 credit course for NON-MAJORS. It is geared for students applying to post-graduate health care programs (physician assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacy, etc.) MICROBIO 310 must be taken previously or concurrently.

Satisfies the Junior Year Writing requirement. Students develop their writing skills while completing a series of short assignments. Each participant will identify a biological topic of their choice to research and write about during the semester. Prerequisites: ENGLWRIT 112 and MICROBIO 310.

This is a course in applied physics with the ultimate goal of describing how stars work. Topics include gravitation, stellar mass determination, stellar structure, stellar atmospheres, stellar evolution, and the physics of pulsating stars. We will approach each of these topics from fundamental concepts and we will work our way to a detailed understanding. On the way we will review the structure of the atom, radiative processes, and some basic principles of thermodynamics.
