Honors General Chemistry-Sci

Basic Principles of chemistry. Microscopic nature of atoms and molecules; macroscopic properties of chemical systems. Topics inlcude stoichiometry, atomic and nuclear structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, gases, and intermolecular forces. More extensive lecture treatment of advanced topics and laboratory work than CHEM111.

Prerequisite: Secondary school chemistry and a grade of 23 or greater on Part A and 5 or greater on Part B of the math placement exam.

Corequisite: MATH127 or 131

Fundamental Stable Mangmt I

First in a four course equine management series. This course will introduce students to the UMass Hadley Farm. Students will work in the barn four mornings each week and attend lecture one morning each week. Basic equine/stable management skills will be demonstrated, as well as a detailed overview of the management of the equine facility. Student work ethics and skills will be evaluated, as well as understanding of lecture topics.

Fundamental chemical concepts/processes in soils, such as ion exchange, precipitation/dissolution, redox reactions, partitioning and adsorption, and solution speciation and nature of soil minerals and organic matter. Computer models used to examine current environmental, agricultural, and engineering problems. Examination of how chemical processes affect fate, transport, availability, and remediation of trace elements, heavy metals and organic contaminants in soils and sediments. Discussion on current environmental issues and problems.

Microbial processes in the soil and sediment environment; ecology of the various microbial communities; the decomposition of organic matter, carbon transformation, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and other mineral transformations. Chemistry of these reactions and their biogeochemical implications. Biological equilibrium, the rhizosphere, and microbial associations. Prerequisites: basic biology and organic chemistry.

Computer models used to examine some current environmental, agricultural, and engineering problems. Problem solving requiring algebraic and numerical manipulations.
