Mental Health and Illness: Epi

This course provides an overview of the epidemiology of mental health, mental illness and wellbeing. Students will explore how epidemiology is used to better understand symptoms and conditions including depression, anxiety, ADHD, complex trauma and substance abuse. Students will also complete a semester-long data analysis project on an aspect of teen mental health.

Epidemic of Loneliness

Vivek Murthy, the Surgeon General of the United States, describes loneliness and a major public health problem that has reached epidemic levels worldwide. In this class we will define loneliness and the resulting disconnection and isolation. We will discuss the importance of social connectedness at a community, national, and global level. By exploring issues of identity, race, displacement, and aging, we will gain a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding loneliness. In this course we will also include strategies for social change to create a more connected world.

TellingStories/DataStatModelVi

The aim of this course is to provide students with the skills necessary to tell interesting and useful stories in real-world encounters with data. Specifically, they will develop the statistical and programming expertise necessary to analyze datasets with complex relationships between variables. Students will gain hands-on experience summarizing, visualizing, modeling, and analyzing data. Students will learn how to build statistical models that can be used to describe and evaluate multidimensional relationships that exist in the real world.

Epidemiology of Women's Health

This course provides an overview of current issues in the epidemiology of women?s health throughout the life cycle. Students will explore how epidemiologic methods are used to evaluate factors influencing reproductive health, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other common disorders in people identifying as women. Students will learn basic quantitative methods, study design concepts, and critical thinking skills. The class will be primarily discussion based.

Water Justice & Planet Health

As the climate changes, many regions of the world are experiencing aridification. Aquifers are being depleted. Surface water is increasingly polluted and in coastal areas, saltwater intrusion threatens fresh water supplies. Water insecurity is a threat multiplier. As social-ecological systems adapt, existing social inequalities will intensify. Where there is inadequate sanitation infrastructure, waterborne disease proliferates. Indigenous nations are disproportionately impacted. Women and girls who are responsible for supplying water for their household face additional stressors.

This independent study involves working with a faculty member as an Undergraduate Course Assistant (UCA) for a Public Health Sciences course. UCAs attend class sessions, assist with development and administration of course materials and activities, and support student learning and engagement. By participating in these activities, UCAs develop communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills in addition to strengthening their own understanding of course content.
