Independent Study

Consider independently exploring a topic of interest under the guidance of a faculty member. Once you identify the subject, take time to research our faculty and their publications. It is important to ensure your interests intersect before asking if they will work with you. This work will be graded and may apply to your upper-level Political Science degree requirements.

PowerPriv&Inequal:Global Scale

What are the major political forces that shaped our world? Why is the world so unequal? How are powerful groups in society able to maintain their position? While human inequality has often been explained in terms of a natural order, in social scientific terms inequality can be understood as a condition related to historical processes and access to political power.

Analytics/Campaigns&Elections

This is a class about campaigns, elections, and the data that fuel them. In this course, we will combine an exploration of the political science literature on elections and campaigns in the United States, with an introduction to data analysis. By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of how political campaigns work and how they can (and cannot) influence voting behavior. You will also acquire data analysis and visualization skills that can be used throughout your academic career, and beyond.

Power

Power is a central feature of political life and one of the key concepts of political science. This course will examine the main approaches and controversies in the study of power. We will investigate how these approaches help us to better understand how power operates in the real world by engaging with various case studies, including: how power works in prisons, schools, at home, in local and global politics, in an Appalachian mining town, a small village in Malaysia, and in countless ways in every day life. (Gen. Ed. DG, SB)
