COLQ: GOTHIC IN LITERATURE

Each colloquium is conducted by means of directed discussion, with emphasis on close reading and the writing of short analytical essays. Priority will be given to incoming students in the fall-semester sections of the colloquia. Other students should consult the course director about possible openings. Enrollment in each section limited to 20. Terror, guilt, and the supernatural in novels, tales, and poems from the 18th to the 20th century. Authors include Walpole, Lewis, Austen, Coleridge, Mary Shelley, Byron, Charlotte Bronte, and James.

COLQ: FICTION

WRITING ROUNDTABLE

Students hone their writing skills (defined broadly to include critical thinking, research and documentation, argument development, and mastery of written English) as they enhance their understanding of an issue of current import and consequence. They read and write in a variety of genres (ranging from experience narratives to academic essays) and supplement their required reading with excursions to scholarly and cultural venues at Smith. Priority given to first-years and sophomores. Prerequisite: One WI course or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limited to 15.
