Modern and classic experiments performed with up-to-date techniques. Course complements 400-level physics courses, and satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Physic and BS-Physic majors. Prerequisites: introductory physics with labs (PHYSIC 181-182, 283, 284, 285, 286, or equivalent), or consent of instructor.

Concluding half of full-year course in modern physics (PHYSICS 284 is first half). Quantum mechanics in three dimensions, and applications, particularly to atoms and nuclei. Prerequisite: PHYSICS 284.

Newtonian dynamics and analytic methods. Conservation laws. Oscillatory phenomena including damping and resonance. Central force problems and planetary orbits. Rigid body mechanics. Introduction to the calculus of variation and the principle of least action. Generalized coordinates. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics. Prerequisites: PHYSICS 151 or 181, MATH 233.
