The course focuses on cultural history of immigration in Israel. The topics include: ideological, political, and social contexts of immigration; interethnic relations; and media representation of immigrants in Israel.

This course examines the role of Jews and Judaism in shaping the negotiation of Religion and State in Europe, especially with the emergence of secularism and the modern nation-state.

Examines such Biblical figures as Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob, Joseph, and others through the study of traditional midrashim as well as contemporary ones by Elie Wiesel, Rabbi Marc Geller, and others.

Introduction to major issues in Jewish legal thought. Historical development of Jewish law and the interplay of religious, social, and moral considerations. Reading selected Talmudic texts in translation; focus on various ethical dilemmas. Students with sufficient Hebrew background, or desiring credit toward the Hebrew minor, may arrange to read texts in Hebrew. (Gen.Ed. SB, G)

This course uses film to discuss Israeli society. Topics include: foundation of Israel, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Holocaust survivors, religion, gender, and interethnic relations. All film showings are with English subtitles.
