Language Suite Conversation

Course taught in French. Designed as part of the living-learning community in Thatcher Language House. Improves knowledge of the French language with emphasis on oral skills. Builds vocabulary, develops ability to understand and communicate more freely in the language by focusing on social and cultural issues.

Language and Literature

Course taught in French. Four Skills course for students with four years' high school French or equivalent. Active and regular participation in class required. Introduction to literary analysis of plays, poems and short stories. Review of grammar as questions arise.

Intermed:Soc Sci

Short lectures, questions sets, discussions. We shall study representative French-speaking countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Polynesia, Quebec, and world issues of current interest through readings, prepared and sight, drawn from magazines, books and international web-sites. Our work is trans-disciplinary, addressing present and past events to gain wider and deeper perspectives of world culture, and socio-economical challenges and achievements. This is a reading course. Students intending to do more advanced work in French should select 240 or 246.

Frequent short written exercises. Review of grammar as questions arise. Suitable for students planning to continue beyond the 240 level. Prerequisite: FRENCHST 230 or equivalent. Note: Students in 246 need not take this course. This course completes the CHFA Language Requirement.
