This course presents an overview of the linguistic structure of English for the purposes of teaching English as an additional language (EAL). Participants will learn the basic elements that every language teacher should know about English grammar and pronunciation. The emphasis throughout the course will be on implications and techniques for teaching English grammar to EAL learners.

Fundamentals of Speech Sounds

This course provides an introduction to the rich diversity of the sounds of the world?s languages and the different ways that they are used across those languages. Students learn how to analyze individual sounds and their patterning in a language. Skills include transcription of sounds in the International Phonetic Alphabet, description of sounds in terms of their production, acoustic measurement of sounds, analysis of sound patterns in terms of constraints and rules.

Introduction to Syntax

Introduction to syntactic theory, with implications for universal grammar and grammatical theory in general. Topics include theories of phrase structure, the form and functioning of transformations, grammatical relations, anaphora and control, word order problems, universals of grammar, relations between grammatical theory and learnability, language acquisition. Honors option may be available. Prerequisite: LINGUIST 201.

Hnr Indstu In Ling

This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.

Language and Advertising

This course investigates the language used in advertisements. Advertisements are designed to persuade us to do things. Our focus will be on how advertisers use language to convey meanings, how they appeal to our emotions and elicit humor. We will examine concrete examples and use basic concepts from linguistic theory to understand the properties of persuasive language and the kinds of meanings that are at play.
