Survey of some of the central texts and themes in contemporary political theory. Authors include Arendt, Foucault, Habermas, Marcuse, Haraway. Themes include authority, modernity/postmodern-ity, identity, rights, totalitarianism, lib-eration, communicative ethics, deterrito-rialization, pluralism, multiculturalism, governmentality and rationalization.

U.S. Foreign Pol/Latin America

U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America, national and coordinated policies of Latin American states towards the United States, and - to a lesser degree - relationships among Latin American countries. Historical developments in U.S.-Latin American relations, key policy areas, the main institutions and groups included in policy making, the policy options available, and likely reasons for - and interests served by - particular policy choices.

InternationalSecurity Policies

This course examines major theories of war and international cooperation and their relationship to current trends in globalization and global governance. We will explore today's major international security challenges such as proliferation, terrorism, insurgency, ethnic conflict, failing states, environmental degradation, resource scarcity, demographic stress and migration, and global poverty.

Gov&Pol East Africa

Comparative analysis of the politics of change in Tanzania and Kenya. Economic dependency and underdevelopment; decolonization and liberation; ideology and practice; democratization and economic liberalization. Emphasis on interaction between domestic and external politics. Prerequisite: upper-division standing, POLISCI 111 or consent of instructor.

African Regional Governance

This class will explore international norms, law, and organizations that govern international relations both among African states and between Africa and the rest of the world. We will look at how the particular the history of and circumstances confronting African states has resulted in distinctive ways of approaching problem-solving. What are the different problems that African regional organizations like the African Union seeks to manage? Why has regional cooperation has become such an important part of these problem-solving efforts?

Latin American Politics

Overview of major approaches to the study of Latin American politics and survey of historical and contemporary democratic, populist, authoritarian, and revolutionary regimes. Special attention to local, national and global forces shaping development strategies and public policies; changing institutional arrangements and shifting discourses of domination; and, social movements and strategies of resistance among subaltern social groups and classes.

Public Administration

The course develops the practical knowledge and analytical skill required to make sense of field problems faced by public managers, and to design and implement strategic and effective practical action in the public sector. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

RussianPoltcs,Law&Society

Since 2000, Russia has turned from a country reeling from a transition away from Communism to a strong state with a renewed sense of national identity and purpose. Yet there are important questions still to be asked and answered about where Russia is headed. This class will give students the analytical tools and the historical background to understand and intelligently debate and discuss the past, present and future of Russia.

Congress&Legsltv Prc

Analysis and evaluation of the U.S. Congress, its structure, procedures, and norms. Emphasis on congressional elections; representation; legislative behavior; the relationship between Congress and the executive branch; and Congress as a source of continuity and a vehicle for change in American politics. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

The American Presidency

Focus on the constitutional, political, institutional, and policy context of the presidency. The creation of the office, the selection process, the policy process, and pathology and reform. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.
