Independent Study

Consider independently exploring a topic of interest under the guidance of a faculty member. Once you identify the subject, take time to research our faculty and their publications. It is important to ensure your interests intersect before asking if they will work with you. This work will be graded and may apply to your upper-level Political Science degree requirements.

Practicum

A practicum/internship will help you gain invaluable knowledge and skills that can serve as a stepping-stone to your career. You can find an internship locally, in a major city, or abroad. Seeking an practicum/internship requires a great deal of initiative on your part - you must both find a site where you can work and connect with a faculty member who will support you in your academic efforts related to that work.

Practicum

Individual field study and practice for a semester or a summer in news organizations, public agencies, or elsewhere. This course number is also used for all internships applied toward credit within the Journalism Department. While these credits will count toward graduation, they do NOT count toward the major -- unless you are in the Sports Journalism Concentration or Public Relations Concentration, both of which require an internship. These credits can only be completed on a Pass/Fail basis.

IS- Feinberg: Universities

Entitled "What Are Universities For? Struggles for the Soul of Higher Ed," the 2024 Feinberg Family Distinguished Lecture Series is exploring the historical roots of the political, economic, and ethical crises in U.S. higher education. This course is offered in conjunction with eligible History Department courses. Students in this course will attend Feinberg Series events and may be expected to complete additional assignments. See participating faculty for details.

IS-MachineLanguage/ChildRescue

Students will work collaboratively to construct production-grade software used to advance the goal of Child Rescue. This course is a group-based, guided independent study. Our goal is to build software that leverages practical machine learning models to be used by professionals dedicated to rescuing children from abuse. Students will be encouraged to design and build their own diagnostic and machine learning tools, while also learning from professionals in the fields of digital forensics and law enforcement.
