S-Community Service Learning

To give students a deeper understanding of families' experiences, and to provide families with much needed support, students will provide home-based respite care to a family raising a child, adolescent or adult with an intellectual or developmental disability. Students will learn about the nature and function of respite care through assigned readings and class discussion. Students will receive training on best practices in providing care to a person with a disability in the home context.

Navigating Psychology

This course will introduce students to the breadth of opportunities available to psychology majors. The activities and assignments will help majors prepare for productive academic training and professional development in the department. Students will connect with faculty members, graduate students, and professionals via department workshops, club meetings, and campus resources. We will explore opportunities in the department, focus areas and fields within psychology, complimentary academic programs, specializations, clubs and organizations, and introduce career paths in psychology.

Brazil in Film & Fiction

The principal aim of this course is to introduce students to Brazilian history and culture through film and selected readings, by focusing on how filmmakers, writers, and artists represent key aspects of Brazilian society past and present: the colonization process; culture contact between Europeans and native Brazilians; slavery and race relations; economic development; immigration and internal migration; life in the backlands; urban problems; the dictatorship and its aftermath; contemporary Brazil. A second aim is to develop analytical skills and writing abilities.

Portuguese Civilization

Chronological, artistic, and philosophical perspective for the study of Portuguese literature and culture. Comprehensive view of the development of Portuguese culture, mainly through plastic arts. Provides background for the in-depth study of Portuguese literature. Prerequisite: PORTUG 240 or consent of instructor.

Brazilian Women

Mixing biography, literary criticism and cultural history this course will explore women's experience through Brazilian history as well as introduce the achievements and contributions of women to the cultural and intellectual history of Brazil. Moreover we will discuss not only what Brazilian women have achieved but also how fundamental issues in Brazilian history have hinged on specific notions of gender.

Conversatnl Port I

Discussion, based on varied topics of current interest and from modern Portuguese and Brazilian writers to develop good speaking ability in Portuguese. Conversations center on everyday life situations. Intended to expand fluency, vocabulary, and cultural awareness.
