Fourth semester of introductory physics sequence. Topics include: oscillators, normal modes, waves, prelude to quantum theory, and principles of quantum mechanics with application to problems in one dimension.
Application of mathematical methods to solving problems in physics using calculus-based methods. Fourier series, Fourier and Laplace transforms and their use in solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Green?s function approach to solving ODEs with initial and boundary value problems. Vector calculus including Stokes and divergence theorems and their applications to electromagnetism.
This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.
