We usually understand novel sentences - e.g., this one - with little or no hesitation. How do we accomplish this? According to the received opinion, our linguistic knowledge divides into two modules - roughly, words and rules - which in turn correspond respectively to Lexical Grammar and Compositional Grammar. The present course concerns Compositional Grammar, more specifically Compositional Semantics -the study of how the meanings of compound expressions are derived from the meanings of their parts.

Medicine is an institution that is crucial to the functioning of all societies. This course explores topics that are key to understanding the epistemology and metaphysics of medicine. We will begin with discussing the concept of disease and the challenges involved in defining "health." Next, we will consider "holism" versus "reductionism" in medicine, as well historically controversial diseases.

Topics may include Frege's theory of sense and reference, Russell's theory of denoting phrases, elocutionary aspects of speech acts, modal and epistemic contexts, theories of tense.

Intensive study of recent work in Anglo-American philosophy. Topics may include problems in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, and other areas. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Phil majors.

The Commonwealth Honors College thesis or project is intended to provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members to define and carry out in-depth research or creative endeavors. It provides excellent preparation for students who intend to continue their education through graduate study or begin their professional careers. The student works closely with their 499Y Honors Research sponsor to pursue research on a topic or question of special interest to them in preparation for writing a 499T Honors Thesis or completing a 499P Honors Project.

Honors Thesis expectations are high. The intended end-product is a traditional research manuscript with accompanying artifact(s), all theses: - are 6 credits or more of sustained research on a single topic, typically conducted over two semesters. - begin with creative inquiry and systematic research. - include documentation of substantive scholarly endeavor. - culminate in an oral defense or other form of public presentation.
