Cultural Diversity/Globe

The main aim of this course, Cultural Diversity Around the Globe, is to look at how culture shapes the way humans think, feel, and act. This course is about why people from different parts of the world think and behave differently, why Homo sapiens is a cultural species, how cultural learning shapes the human mind, and why there is substantial diversity in our psychology around the globe. The materials is this course cover topics like how culture affects our emotions, sense of self, morals, and how people behave in social contexts.

Honors Thesis

Honors Thesis expectations are high. The intended end-product is a traditional research manuscript with accompanying artifact(s), all theses: - are 6 credits or more of sustained research on a single topic, typically conducted over two semesters. - begin with creative inquiry and systematic research. - include documentation of substantive scholarly endeavor. - culminate in an oral defense or other form of public presentation. Students registering for an Honors Thesis following Honors Research (499Y) must have the approval of their faculty committee.

Food and Society of Japan

As a nexus of physical needs, cultural creativity, economic transactions, and social interactions, food occupies a core part of human existence. In this seminar, we will explore the historical role of food in the formation of Japanese cultural identity while paying attention also to how the way we think of food is affected by the surrounding social, cultural, and economic perspectives and activities.
