With lab. Introduction to 200 basic ornamental plants used in landscape architectural, horticultural, arboricultural, and other design uses; their identification, uses, and cultural requirements. Two weekly field trips around campus. Workbook with sketches required.

In capitalist societies, inequity creates winners and losers, profits and losses, and the privileged and the marginalized. Inequity is defined as a ?lack of fairness or justice? and refers to a system of privilege that is created and maintained by interlocking societal structures (i.e., family, marriage, education, housing, government, law, economics, employment, etc.). Alternatively, equity is defined as ? `the state, quality or ideal of being just, impartial and fair.? To achieve and sustain equity, equity needs to be thought of as a structural and systemic concept? and requires action.

Lecture Series in LANDARCH

This course is an introduction to critical topics in design and planning as a medium for envisioning the social, cultural, and ecological life of regions, cities and landscapes through the thoughts and works of local, national and international academic and professional leaders. Themes articulate climate change resiliency, social equity, urban design, arts, landscape aesthetics and cultural heritage. Course format is attending the Department's Zube Lecture Series and submission of reflective papers on presented topics.

Honors Research

The Commonwealth Honors College thesis or project is intended to provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members to define and carry out in-depth research or creative endeavors. It provides excellent preparation for students who intend to continue their education through graduate study or begin their professional careers. The student works closely with their 499Y Honors Research sponsor to pursue research on a topic or question of special interest to them in preparation for writing a 499T Honors Thesis or completing a 499P Honors Project.
