Gov & Politics of East Asia

This course is designed to introduce to undergraduate students the government and politics of two major East Asian states, China and Japan. We will examine the historical and institutional settings of these two governments, survey the changes that have taken place in the Chinese and Japanese societies, and discuss the relationship between political organization and economic performance in both countries.

China and the World

This course provides an overview of China?s relationships with the world. Key topics covered include the historical, domestic, and international contexts of Chinese foreign policy, China?s relations with key partner countries, security strategies, foreign economic relations, and the country?s evolving role in global governance. Previous background on Asian politics or history is useful, but not required.

Civilians in Conflict

This course examines what social scientists know about how to create policies that protect civilians in armed conflict. Students will learn the basic international law on conflict-affected civilians and consider dilemmas in implementing and enforcing that law, in historical perspective and in the context of current policy dilemmas.

Feminist Theory & Politics

A theoretical consideration of different feminisms including liberal-feminism, socialist-feminism, anarcha-feminism, radical feminism and eco-feminism. Also examines: the relation between feminist theory and practice; the historical development of feminism; feminist issues within the canon of political theory; the problem of identity and difference(s) as related to race, class, and gender.

International Political Econ

This course provides a thorough introduction to international political economy (IPE): the study of the dynamic interplay between international economics and politics. The course first reviews different theoretical approaches to analyzing and explaining governance in the contemporary international system and the basis for world order. It then covers a wide variety of contemporary issue areas in international political economy, including the politics of international trade, development, and international financial regulation.

International Law

Development of basic rules of public international law. Topics include sources of evidence for law, international legal personality, jurisdiction, treatment of individuals, law of treaties, law of the sea, resort to force, and peaceful settlement of disputes. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors. POLISCI 121 or equivalent strongly recommended.
